When should a female go to the gynecologist?

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), it is generally recommended that a female should have an initial visit to a gynecologist sometime between the ages of 13 to 16, wherein the gynecologist will ask for their medical history, if they are sexually active, and other questions regarding their vaginal and reproductive health. Pelvic exams are only necessary if the patient is sexually active.

After the first visit, it is generally recommended for female patients to see the gynecologist every other year until they turn 21 years of age, unless they are sexually active before that time, in which case it is recommended that they see a gynecologist once every year for a regular exam. Once they turn 21, it is recommended that they see a gynecologist once every year for a routine exam until they are 29 years of age. After which, visits can be reduced to once every other year, unless the individual is pregnant or is being treated for a disease that pertains to the specialty of a gynecologist.

Besides yearly or bi-yearly appointments, it is a good idea to see a gynecologist if you are experiencing menstrual changes, pain, unusual discharge from your vagina, as well as unusual odors, or other concerning developments regarding your vaginal and reproductive health.

Is it better to have a male or female gynecologist?

While both male and female gynecologists are fully trained and qualified to provide expert gynecological services, many patients feel more comfortable with female gynecologists due to reasons of familiarity, trust, and the more natural ability of a female gynecologist to empathize with issues that are unique to the female sex. If you can relate, we are happy to let you know that we have board-certified female gynecologists at Dr. Michelle Trandai, MD, who can provide expert and empathetic gynecological service to you, regardless of the medical concern you bring to us!

What should I know before going to the gynecologist?

If you have never seen a gynecologist before, it is entirely normal to feel nervous leading up to the appointment. However, we want you to know at Dr. Michelle Trandai, MD, that our clinic is a safe space where your privacy and wishes are respected. As such, you can always ask for the appointment to end if you feel uncomfortable!

That said, you should be prepared to answer some personal questions regarding your medical and sexual history. Your responses will be completely confidential, and the questions are only asked to make sure you are as healthy as possible. Your gynecologist may provide some resources on vaginal health and hygiene, as well as information and resources on how to manage menstrual cycles. If you are under 21 and are not sexually active, you will not need a pelvic exam.
